Anecdote: Mining for Bitcoin.

Resident Outlier Reports uncovered excessive server usage.

See above for a graph showing electricity consumption before and after the site team’s intervention. They used data in a Resident Outlier Report to identify excessive server usage, and engage with the resident.

Scenario.

Thanks to real-time data from the Utopi Platform, one PBSA Operator was able to identify a resident mining for Bitcoin, and after engagement, saw the daily average energy consumption drop by over half in just one month.

The team at this PBSA site used a Utopi Resident Outlier Report to identify this space as being a top outlier, using considerably more energy than other spaces.

The space was averaging 50 kWh per day in November.

For context, the average 2-3 bedroom house only uses 7.94 kWh per day.

Resolution.

The site team discussed the excessive energy consumption with the resident. After explaining the negative environmental effects, server use was minimised.

By December, average consumption reduced by 27kWh to 23 kWh per day, a reduction of over 50%.

Potential Savings:

= £3,250 saved

= 10,000 kWh saved

= 2000 kg carbon saved
